ABOUT SILVATECH

Silvatech Corporation was founded in the spring of 1984 by Bill Rousseau and Mike Hughes. The two had developed a computerized setworks control to improve the performance of Bill's mill.

The system, now called the Silvatech Universal Set Controller was developed to enable a sawyer to produce more accurately sized lumber of better grade and to do it faster, and with less effort than was previously possible. Other mill owners and equipment manufacturers encouraged them to produce the system for other mills.

Mike is an electronics engineer with considerable experience in computers as well as instrumentation and machine control in hostile environments. He has also operated a small softwood mill. Bill owned and operated a mill in Vermont, sawing primarily hardwood and pine for over ten years. After receiving a degree in forestry and later acquiring the mill from his father, he gained experience in grading, grade sawing, machine building and repair, and mill management.

Silvatech has grown to 20 employees and nearly 1300 systems in the field. Our setworks control systems include set shaft driven carriages with electric or air motors, and hydraulic motors with either conventional or proportional valves. Carriage systems commonly also optional control of edgers, resaws, and trimmers. Our systems also commonly control scrags and twin or quad bands. We also provide controls for linear positioner carriages and scanners.

Silvatech manufactures automated tally systems which can include grading station and sorter controls. These systems automatically measure and display length, width, and thickness and, with an operator input for grade, either mark the board for manual sorting or control an automatic sorter.

Our latest project is an edger optimizer. We are developing a new three dimensional scanning system as well as a simple and compact infeed system for this project. We plan to make this technology affordable for a great many mills who can see the advantages in terms of increased profits but feel that currently available systems are too expensive, complicated and take up far too much room.

Silvatech has, over the last fifteen years, provided many mills with productive technology which has enabled operators to work with less stress and fatigue while improving volume yield, grade yield, production and ultimately profit.
